Non-Destructive Testing
Non Destructive Testing (NDT) also referred to as Non Destructive Examination (NDE) is a group of analysis techniques used to evaluate the properties of a material, component or system without causing damage. Because NDT does not permanently alter the article being inspected, it is a highly-valuable technique that can save both money and time in product evaluation, troubleshooting, and research.
Oilfield Testing Services Ltd offer a full range of NDT techniques utilising the latest equipment and personnel all qualified to at least PCN or ASNT level II standard, the range of NDT techniques is summarised below.
Magnetic Particle Inspection
This inspection method is used for the detection of surface and near surface flaws in ferromagnetic materials by the application of magnetic fields. The primary use is for crack detection. Usually referred to as MPI
Liquid Penetrant Inspection
This inspection method is used for the detection of surface breaking flaws in non-ferromagnetic and ferromagnetic materials. Primarily used in non-ferromagnetic materials for crack detection. Usually referred to as DPI.
Industrial Radiography
OTS use both gamma and x-rays to produce images of the internal structure of objects onto radiographic film. Ionising radiation passes through the material and is partially absorbed by it; the resulting image is therefore an image of the variations in thickness of material that the rays have passed through. The methods are used essentially for the detection of defects within welds. Radiography at OTS is carried out in our purpose built under ground exposure bay.
Ultrasonic Inspection
Ultrasonic examination can be used for either internal examination of solid objects (i.e. welded joints) for locating and sizing defects or for simple thickness measurement of objects. The techniques rely upon the application of sound waves and then measuring response signals over time. Usually referred to as UT.
Eddy Current Inspection
A very sensitive method used for the detection of flaws in both ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Eddy Current testing can be used both for integrity inspection and for material sorting. It is primarily used for crack detection through protective coatings..
